Certified Estimating Professional (CEP)
The Certified Estimating Professional (CEP) is a flagship credential from AACE International. It validates a professional's ability to contribute to the economic evaluation of potential projects by developing budgets, project resource requirements, and value engineering while applying the Total Cost Management (TCM) framework.

The CEP certification distinguishes practitioners who possess the specialized knowledge to develop and communicate cost estimates for complex projects. Aligned with AACE’s Recommended Practice 46R-11, the program ensures that estimators can advise management on project funding decisions with high accuracy, using both deterministic and probabilistic estimating techniques.
AACE International maintains strict eligibility criteria to ensure that only seasoned professionals achieve the CEP status:
- Experience Only: 8 years of industry-related experience.
- Education + Experience: 4 years of industry-related experience PLUS a 4-year industry-related college degree.
- Ethics: Adherence to AACE International’s Canons of Ethics.
- Expertise: Familiarity with the AACE Total Cost Management (TCM) Framework and Skills & Knowledge of Cost Engineering.
The CEP exam and training cover four critical domains of the estimating lifecycle:
- Basic Estimating Knowledge: Cost elements, pricing, and mathematical foundations.
- Estimating Process and Practices: Estimate classifications (Class 5 to Class 1), methodologies, and the Basis of Estimate (BOE).
- Other Estimating Issues: Risk analysis, contingency, escalation, and the use of estimating software.
- Communication: The ability to present and write a clear technical memo based on a given scenario.
This certification is essential for those involved in the early stages of the project lifecycle:
- Estimators and Cost Engineers.
- Project Managers and Project Control Professionals.
- Quantity Surveyors and Schedulers.
- Contract Administrators and Procurement Specialists.
- Engineering and Construction Leads.
- Credential Name: Certified Estimating Professional (CEP).
- Validity: The certification is valid for 3 years.
- Maintenance: To recertify, you must earn 12 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) or retake the exam every three-year cycle.
Fees are determined by AACE International and vary based on membership status.
| Category | AACE Member Fee | Non-Member Fee |
| CEP Examination Fee | $500 USD | $625 USD |
| Resit Fee | $250 USD | $250 USD |
| Annual Membership | ~$200 USD | N/A |
| Recertification Fee | $200 USD | $450 USD |
Note: The exam is a 5-hour, 119-question proctored session involving multiple-choice and a written memo.
Q: Is the CEP exam open-book?
A: No. The CEP exam is a closed-book exam. Any style of battery-operated calculator is permitted, but no reference materials are allowed in the testing center.
Q: How is the score calculated?
A: You must achieve an overall average score of 70% or higher across the four domains to pass.
Q: What happens if I fail the written memo but pass the multiple-choice?
A: You must pass the examination as a whole. Because the final result is an average, a very low score in the communication (memo) domain could result in a failure even if your technical knowledge is high.
Q: Do I have to take a course to sit for the exam?
A: No, AACE does not require a specific training course, but most successful candidates find that a structured prep program significantly improves their pass rate.
A standard CEP preparation course includes the following technical modules:
- Module 1: Foundations of Estimating: WBS vs. CBS, labor productivity, and material cost sources.
- Module 2: Estimate Classification: Applying AACE standards for conceptual vs. detailed estimates.
- Module 3: Estimation Methodologies: Parametric, analogous, and unit rate estimating.
- Module 4: Risk and Contingency: Quantifying uncertainty and using Monte Carlo simulations.
- Module 5: The Basis of Estimate (BOE): Documenting assumptions, exclusions, and data sources.
- Module 6: Written Communication: Practicing the memo-writing component of the exam.
The course highlights:
- Duration 35 - 40 Hours
- Language English
- Level Advanced
- Mode Online/ Corporate
