Program Management Professional (PMI-PgMP)
The Program Management Professional (PMP) is a prestigious credential for those who direct the strategic alignment of multiple, related projects. While the PMP focuses on the "how" of execution, the PgMP focuses on the "what" and "why" of organizational benefits and strategic goals.

The PgMP training focuses on the Standard for Program Management (5th Edition). It prepares leaders to manage complex activities that span functions, organizations, and regions to achieve outcomes that single projects cannot.
- Core Focus: Strategic alignment, program life cycle, and benefits management.
- The Difference: Programs are about synergy and strategic value, not just managing a collection of projects.
PgMP has the most rigorous application process of all PMI certifications. You must meet one of the following:
Education Background | Project Management Experience | Program Management Experience |
Secondary Degree (High School) | 4 years (48 months) | 7 years (84 months) |
Four-Year Degree (Bachelor’s) | 4 years (48 months) | 4 years (48 months) |
- Note: If you already hold a PMP, the project management experience requirement is automatically satisfied. All experience must have been earned within the last 15 years.
The training covers the five performance domains defined in the PgMP Examination Content Outline (ECO):
- Strategic Program Management (15%): Aligning the program with organizational strategy and business cases.
- Program Life Cycle (44%): Managing the program from initiation through transition and closure.
- Benefits Management (11%): Defining, creating, and sustaining the value the program was intended to deliver.
- Stakeholder Engagement (16%): Navigating the needs and expectations of high-level stakeholders.
- Governance (14%): Establishing the systems and rules for decision-making and oversight.
This certification is designed for senior-level practitioners who:
- Manage multiple, related projects in a coordinated way.
- Are responsible for achieving specific strategic business objectives.
- Direct program-level budgets, resources, and complex stakeholder environments.
- Hold titles like Senior Program Manager, Director of PMO, or Operations Director.
Â
- Credential Earned: Program Management Professional (PgMP)®.
- Maintenance: To maintain the credential, you must earn 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs) every three years.
- Recognition: PgMP is a “rare” elite certification, with significantly fewer holders worldwide compared to the PMP.
The PgMP involves a two-step evaluation: a Panel Review of your experience followed by a Multiple-Choice Exam.

Q: What is the “Panel Review”?
A: Before you can take the exam, a panel of volunteer program managers reviews your experience descriptions to ensure you have actually performed at a program level (not just large project management).
Q: Is the PgMP exam harder than the PMP?
A: Most professionals find it more challenging because the questions are highly situational and require a “program-level mindset” (thinking about benefits rather than just tasks).
Q: How many questions are on the exam?
A: The exam consists of 170 multiple-choice questions and you have 4 hours to complete it.
Q: Do I need the PMP before I can get the PgMP?
A: No. While many people follow that path, it is not a requirement if you meet the program management experience criteria.
Q: What happens if I fail the Panel Review?
A: PMI will provide feedback on your application. You are typically allowed to update and resubmit your experience descriptions once.
